How Flat-Fee Compares to 1% AUM

Most advisors charge ~1% of assets they manage each year. Here's what that looks like next to a flat annual fee.

Portfolio Size 1% AUM Fee
$250,000 $2,500 /yr
$500,000 $5,000 /yr
$1,000,000 $10,000 /yr
$2,000,000 $20,000 /yr
Summit wealth management: $4,800 /yr flat — regardless of portfolio size

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a financial plan?

A financial plan evaluates your current finances, clarifies your goals, and lays out a prioritized, step-by-step strategy to reach them. It coordinates cash flow, investments, taxes, insurance, and estate basics, and includes clear next actions and timelines.

Why pay for a financial plan?

It delivers conflict-free expertise and a clear, prioritized roadmap — helping you avoid costly mistakes, coordinate taxes and investments, and make faster, more confident progress toward your goals.

Which tier is right for me?

Pathfinder is best for DIY-leaning folks who want a one-time plan and roadmap without an ongoing commitment. Navigator is ideal if you want year-round planning and tax support but prefer to manage your own investments. Summit is for those who want everything in Navigator plus hands-on investment management so you don't have to do it yourself. Most clients start with Pathfinder and continue into Navigator or Summit when they're ready.

What is the total cost?

Pathfinder: $1,500 one-time.
Navigator: $1,500 onboarding + $3,000/year ($750 quarterly). First-year total is typically $4,500.
Summit: $1,500 onboarding + $4,800/year ($1,200 quarterly). First-year total is typically $6,300.

The onboarding fee is credited toward your first quarterly payments, so you're not paying twice for the initial planning work.

How many meetings are included?

Pathfinder typically involves 2–3 meetings over about 60–90 days. Navigator and Summit clients have quarterly reviews, plus additional check-ins during key times like benefits enrollment season or year-end tax planning.

How do payments work?

For Pathfinder, the flat fee is billed at the start of the engagement through AdvicePay (bank transfer or credit card). For Navigator and Summit, the $1,500 onboarding fee is collected upon signing, and ongoing fees are billed quarterly through AdvicePay. Summit clients may also authorize fee deduction from a managed account at the custodian.

What's the difference between Navigator and Summit?

Both include comprehensive ongoing financial planning, integrated tax planning, annual tax preparation, quarterly reviews, and unlimited email support. The difference is investment management. Navigator is advice-only — you receive investment recommendations and implement them yourself. Summit includes hands-on investment management where we build, manage, and rebalance your portfolio for you using low-cost, globally diversified index funds.

Is tax preparation really included?

Yes. Annual tax preparation is included for Navigator and Summit clients at no additional cost. This covers a standard individual Form 1040 return. If your situation involves unusual complexity (multiple businesses, foreign income, etc.), we'll discuss any additional pricing in advance.

Are you a fiduciary?

Yes. As a CFP® professional at a fee-only RIA, we act as a fiduciary 100% of the time. We don't earn commissions or sell products — the only compensation we receive is directly from our clients for our services.

Do you work virtually? Which states?

Yes — fully virtual nationwide via Zoom. We're based in East Tennessee and serve clients across the U.S.

What is your investment philosophy?

We recommend passive investing through a portfolio of low-cost, globally diversified index funds, tailored to your goals and risk tolerance, with periodic rebalancing and tax-aware implementation. For Summit clients, we typically use a simple model of 4–5 ETFs and a bond ladder.

Can I switch tiers later?

Absolutely. Many clients start with Pathfinder and later move into Navigator or Summit. You can also upgrade from Navigator to Summit (or step back from Summit to Navigator) as your needs change. We'll adjust your service agreement accordingly.

Fees shown are standard pricing for most clients. Fees may be adjusted for unusually complex situations; see our ADV Part 2A for complete fee details. Fund/ETF internal expenses and custodial transaction fees are separate and paid to the provider, not to OptimalPath Advisors. Annual tax preparation covers a standard individual Form 1040; unusual complexity may require separate pricing discussed in advance.
